What's Up With This Macbeth Movie?

Does anybody know anything about this movie version of Macbeth directed by Geoffrey Wright?  It seems unstuck in time to me.  The site is Australian, which at first made me think “Ok, we just can’t get it in the US, I’ll stop worrying about it.”  But today over on Shakespeare Complete I saw reference to the DVD coming out, and a contest that ends April 30, 2008.  But, on the main site (first link), it says right on the top, “On DVD September 10.”  Even IMDB says that it’s been on DVD since May, 2007. What the heck?

  1. That’s what I was figuring too, Elizabeth – but then what’s up with the site having a contest until April 30, 2008?

I’m thinking that maybe they got their hands on some and, completely unrelated to the “release” of the DVD, are just driving traffic.

Hey, free DVD’s still a free DVD, I entered :).

  2. I found out about this version a couple months ago, I grabbed a copy of it but I haven’t watched it yet. Where does all my time go? I’ll make time to watch it sooner or later. I’ll try to post my thoughts on it sometime.

  3. I watched the movie last night. It was interesting to say the least. Most of the text was cut. In a movie just under two hours about one hour total had dialogue. Nearly all of the poetry is gone, just the main plot points and “essential” dialogue remained.

It’s set in the world of modern gangs and drug-lords. No swords here, but lots and lots of guns. There are some clever ideas in this movie and I’d say it’s worth a watch if you’re curious. I’m slowly making my way through most Shakespeare on film. It’s not bad, but if you’re expecting a true to the text edition you won’t find it here at all. But it’s good for some entertainment.

It’s not a family movie by any means so don’t let the kids see it. Lots of violence, blood, sex, nudity… the works.
